Mansions, A Museum, ad A President
Independence, Missouri Wednesday, June 6, 2012
We will travel to Independence, Missouri and our first stop will be at the Vaile Mansion. The Vaile Mansion was built in 1881, is one of the finest examples of Second Empire Victorian architecture in the country with colorful ceiling paintings, hand wood-grained trim, crystal chandeliers and nine marble fireplace mantels. The showiest house in Independence, it is a towering stone-trimmed, red brick Victorian wedding cake, with 31 rooms and Carrara marble fireplaces. The Vaile stable has mahogany paneled stalls. There is a greenhouse and four full time gardeners. If Harvey Vaile, who made his money in "pure water" and contract mail delivery, was not the richest man in town, he certainly lived as though he were.
Next, we'll be off to the Bingham-Waggoner Estate. This estate was built in 1852 along the 1846 alignment of the Santa Fe Trail. This magnificent home was once owned by George C. Bingham, famed Civil War artist. In the 1890's the Waggoner's purchased the home and 95% of the furnishings are original to the home.
We will enjoy a delicious Fried Checking Dinner served with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Corn, Green Salad, Dinner Roll and Apple Pie in the Carriage House of the Bingham-Waggoner Estate.
After touring two beautiful mansions and a bountiful lunch we will head for the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum. We will enjoy a film by producer Charles Guggenheim, exhibits and memorabilia on Truman's presidency and private life. Of special interest is a full-scale reproduction of the Oval Office circa 1948, and the grave sites of Harry and Bess. The Museum has completed a $22 million renovation which includes a new multi-media exhibit with two interactive decision theaters on the Truman presidency. Note: backpacks, food, and beverages are not allowed and flash photography is prohibited.
Deposit of $20.00 Due at Registration Cost: $68.00 per person Balance Due: Wednesday, May 2, 2012
